Codes and conventions in film (Research)

What are codes in films: "Codes represent the underlying systems of signs and symbols which create meaning. The concept of codes is best divided into two types or categories of codes which include technical codes and symbolic codes."

Technical codes: Technical codes represent the many ways that equipment is utilized in sharing a story in the film

Symbolic codes: show what is beneath the surface of what we see.

Codes are important to advance a narrative and communicate information about a character or issues and themes in the media product.

What are conventions: "Conventions are the generally accepted ways of doing something." These three types of conventions: Form, story, and genre conventions

Form Conventions are the certain ways we expect types of media codes to be arranged.

Story Conventions: common narrative structures and understandings that are common in storytelling media products. Some examples of these conventions include: Narrative Structures, Cause and Effect, Character Construction, and Point of View

Genre Conventions: Point to the common use of tropes, characters, settings, or themes in a particular type of medium
