Genre and Iconography chart (Preliminary Exercise)

Image
This assignment had me research an actor who was a typecast actor for the genre I making my intro on. I chose to research Will Smith as my actor for several reasons. On top of being the star of many action/comedy movies he always adds an extra flair to any scene, he's in. Also, Will Smith has always been one of my favorite actors since the Fresh Prince of Bel-air. The four movies I chose all have action and comedy within the intro or setup. After finishing the chart I had a discussion to add a sub-genre in our intro. Like how most Will Smith movies have action there is comedy in them as well. I want to make an action-comedy. The main reason I want to change our intro to this is it allows more creativity. Action movies usually fall under a clichĂ© but comedy can be anything.

Codes and conventions in film (Research)

Image
What are codes in films: "Codes represent the underlying systems of signs and symbols which create meaning. The concept of codes is best divided into two types or categories of codes which include technical codes and symbolic codes." Technical codes: Technical codes represent the many ways that equipment is utilized in sharing a story in the film Symbolic codes: show what is beneath the surface of what we see. Codes are important to advance a narrative and communicate information about a character or issues and themes in the media product. What are conventions: "Conventions are the generally accepted ways of doing something." These three types of conventions: Form, story, and genre conventions Form Conventions are the certain ways we expect types of media codes to be arranged. Story Conventions: common narrative structures and understandings that are common in storytelling media products. Some examples of these conventions include: Narrative Structures, Cause and ...

Studying semiotics with chart (Preliminary Exercise)

Image
This is the classwork from Friday 11/4/21. For this assignment, we got to pick our own trailers from the past 5 years to analyze our signs and symbols for their signifiers and denotative/connotative signs. For my movie, I choose Batman V. Superman Dawn of Justice. I choose this trailer because I love the action/superhero genre and I know these genres have several of the signs as it is a movie based on two opposing sides which different views of the world           The trailer used will be helpful later when drafting the intro for my group's movie because we agreed on action as a genre. This graph gives insight into how factors such as colors can create tension and meaning. When making this I was noting how within the movie props made impactful changes to the tone of the scene. My group and I plan on adapting that into our movie by using a prop as the main point in our intro while keeping the prop ...

Audience Analysis (section 2A) (Preliminary Exercise)

Image
On this part, we  analyzed the reasons audiences are grouped by media industries. I analyzed the groups age, gender, sexuality, culture, socia class, and ethnicity. I researched the effects these had on several movies. The research shows depth in thought media industries have when targetting their audience. The point of targeting audiences is so that the product from these companies have consumers they know will support the product.

Audience Analysis (Section 1) (Preliminary Exercise)

Image
For this part of the assignment, I had to research the general information of a movie that helps with audience analysis. While this is the general part of the research, all the factors that were researched all have great impacts on the audience. The most influential of the factors are the genre, actors, and platform of release. The genre lets the audience know what type of theme the movie might have and how it will make them feel. The genre is the most important as it will contribute to the actor that is chosen. Audiences tend to favor movies depending on the actors included. That's why when movies like Jumanji hire famous celebrities like Kevin Hart to play a role. The other important factor is the release platform. In recent years, the pandemic has made release platforms a big way of promoting a movie. Most movies that release on streaming services are widely received and are more accessible than in theaters.

Semiotics: A study of Signs, symbols and codes group powerpoint. (Preliminary Exercise)

Image
For our assignments we researched semiotics. Semiotics is  the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation. My group and I agreed that we should look into comedy and actions because that's we felt most comfortable with the signs in that genre. The point of this assignment was to research a movie and note its genres, conventions, signs (denotative or connotative), and many symbols.     I was responsible for slides 7-14. However, I'm only showing slides 12 and 12 because they were the reflection slides and show what was learned through our research. This research we conducted helped strengthen our understanding of how a character should contribute to telling the genre of the story with the props. We also learned how to use the elements of mise en scene to better connect our conventions to our movie opening.       We plan on using what we learned from this exercise to add more meaning to our movie without dialog...

Code and convention (Preliminary Exercise)

Image
In class, we watched the trailer of Inheritance. For the assignment, we had to research the movies writers, directors, production companies, etc. The purpose of the assignment was to research it to better understand what was the genre and why and how it was expressed by codes and conventions. We also compared the codes used in the trailers to other movies of the same genre

Meaning of visual signs (Preliminary Exercise)

Image
On 11/3/21 We watched a trailer for the Hunger Games. During the trailer, we had to analyze three visual signs and their denotative and connotative meanings. For the three signs, I choose Katniss's wedding dress, the stage they were on, the audience they were on, and their audience. I found the usage of visual signs to be an important part of this movie. Visual signs contribute also contribute a lot of meaning to the audio within short shots/clips. My team and I plan on using several visual signs within our film opening a why show the depth of our knowledge of filmmaking. The Hunger Games provided a lot of inspiration since we plan to do the action genre, the usage of simple visuals like the dress to portray meaning. The only limit is that we might not have enough time to build up to the meaning of the visual signs like in the Hunger Games

Welcome to My AICE Media Studies Blog!

1 . Media studies is an important class because it teaches students how to analyze film and other media texts to great extents. My favorite media products to consume are video games, tv, and film. I like these media forms for their products. Media products from these forms provide timeless entertainment that can be enjoyed with groups of people epically friends. 2. I consume many media products, among my favorites are halo (game), Minecraft (game), and shows like shameless (tv series). I consume games through my Xbox. However, if I’m not home or watching Netflix I consume products through my mobile device (phone)
