Camera shot sizes and angles (Research)

What are shot sizes in film? What is the purpose?

"Shot size is how much of the setting or subject is displayed within a given frame of a video, photo, or animation, hence the scope or size of the shot.". The different shot sizes communicate a narrative and when combined with post-production (primarily editing) tells a story.

How are shot sizes used in comedy?

According to Julio Macat (cinematographer from Home Alone), shot sizes are used for 3 things in comedy.

Number 1 Get the "goods": Every shot within a comedy scene holds a purpose, the purpose is sometimes referred to as "the goods" of the shot. The goods hold the reason a cinematographer included the scene in the movie. When shot sizes are used in conjunctions with camera angles, they tell the story. Even if other means of telling the story aren't as effective, the shot sizes will still tell the story effectively.

Number 2 Shoot wide and close: Using wider shot sizes close in a subject closer to the camera. This method of using the camera tends to expand the effect of the aesthetic. Wider angles are used to highlight what aspect of a subject should be focused on by an audience.

Number 3 Work musically: The best shot sizes are the ones that works with the soundtrack playing. Working with music lets the cinematographer thinks about how well the sizes works with the upbeat music playing in the movie.
