What is Lighting in Film
"Lighting is a fundamental to film because it creates a visual mood, atmosphere, and sense of meaning for the audience. Whether it’s dressing a film set or blocking actors, every step of the cinematic process affects the lighting setup, and vice-versa."
The Purpose of lighting in Film: Lighting tells the audience where to look, Lighting reflects the psychology of characters, and Lighting defines and supports the genre of the film
Who is responsible for Lighting in Film
The cinematographer
Responsibility: "Design the lighting plan, executes the cinematographer’s lighting plan, and oversees the crew that brings the lighting plan to life."
Cinematographer: Mauro Fiore
Style: He usage of lighting changes on how the story is being told. He works on primarily action films and when parts of the movie are intensify he uses bright light in open or condense spaces to express mode. On the other hand, during parts of the movie that is dialog centered lighting is limited to subjects and usually causes darker backgrounds.
His known movie: Spider-Man No Way Home (2021), Avatar (2009), Lost Souls (2000), and Security (2021)
Elements of lighting in Film
Direction- The angle at which a light hits your subject shapes the subject within the frame
Quality- light's quality describes the softness of its shadows and how it behaves.
Source- the key light is the main source of illumination. It is usually the strongest and has the most influence n the look of the scene.
Color- visual tools to create meaning, and to create a sense of depth and three-dimensionality.
