Sounds in Film (Research)

Image
What is sound in Film? " Sound in a movie includes music, dialogue, sound effects, ambient noise and/or background noise, and soundtracks. Some sort of sound is always used to enhance the movie experience." The purpose of sound in film is to, "deliver information, making it clear what’s happening in the plot of the film. It also adds another level to the production value, heightening the immersive nature of the production."         Who is responsible for the sound in film? The Production Sound Mixer is the one responsible for recording high-quality audio on set, location for film, television productions, and leads the production sound crew. Production Sound Mixer: Steve Boeddeker Style: Boeddeker's style included the mixing of corresponding sound elements in order to create the message of his movie. For example, when he wanted to make a soundtrack for a peaceful moment he mixes sounds to range between soft...

Editing in Film Jigsaw Vocabulary (Research)

Image
This was a group assignment in which my team and I had to work on defining the 32 terms on editing in film. The terms were all ways that edit or move the camera to create effects. Other terms were important because they established the rules of film and how breaking them messes up the film. For example the 180 degree rule is mentioned. It is also mentioned that if this rule is broken that the scene becomes chaotic and losses the screen direction. The terms were given to use to stregthen our understanding on how to use the camera since we will soon enter our pre production phase.

What Makes a Comedy (Research)

Image
What makes a film a "comedy"?     A film with light-hearted dramas that entertains, amuses, and causes enjoyment is a comedy. They're made by over-exaggerated situations, actions, and characters. Comedies are made to challenge the frustrations of life and bring enjoyment to them. The different ways this is done cause the different types of comedy in films. These include slapstick, deadpan, verbal comedy, screwball, dark comedy, and parodies.  For our movie, we're going to use aspects of slapstick and verbal comedy. We plan on incorporating this through a light-hearted chase scene.

Editing ideas (research)

Image
In class, we took notes on the essential types of camera alignments and editing. We researched the definitions for each and then described the three key ideas behind using each. For practice, we are going to take shots that take advantage of a term and its key ideas. This is going to be useful as next month we start to draft our movies and understand what shots will strengthen our understanding of why to use them. Taking different types of shots and understanding their significance of them makes it easier to film the movie since the different shots can impact the audience more.

Camera shot sizes and angles (Research)

Image
What are shot sizes in film? What is the purpose?     " Shot size is how much of the setting or subject is displayed within a given frame of a video, photo, or animation, hence the scope or size of the shot.". The different shot sizes communicate a narrative and when combined with post-production (primarily editing) tells a story.        How are shot sizes used in comedy?     According to Julio Macat (cinematographer from Home Alone), shot sizes are used for 3 things in comedy.       Number 1 Get the "goods": Every shot within a comedy scene holds a purpose, the purpose is sometimes referred to as "the goods" of the shot. The goods hold the reason a cinematographer included the scene in the movie. When shot sizes are used in conjunctions with camera angles, they tell the story. Even if other means of telling the story aren't as effective, the shot sizes will still tell the story effectiv...

Camara Movement for comedy (preliminary exercise)

Image
What are the camera movements used in films?     Camera movements are the variety of ways the camera can be moved on a vertical or horizontal axis to create an effect. Camera movements are most commonly used to direct the viewer's attention, reveal an offscreen area, and add information to a scene. Camera movements are important because they "f ollow the action, add a sense of forwarding momentum, add pace & energy, and allow the viewer to participate in the action."          What camera movements are used in comedy films? 1. The Push (too far) in- When the camera pushes in it typically indicates that something of significance is on screen, but when the camera pushes in too far and breaks the intensity it shows that the movie is a comedy 2. Zoom-out: " an in-camera special effect where one shot zooms towards or away from the subject while simultaneously zooming out of or into the frame.". Typically used...

Break down of MIse en scene (Research)

Image
After learning of mise en scene in class on 11/30, the next assignment was to create a PowerPoint defining mise en scene in more detail. In the assignment, mise en scene is broken down into 7 parts each with separate meanings and impacts on the creation of a scene. This PowerPoint bettered my understanding of what some of the aspects meant and how they were used in scene creation.     After breaking down each aspect I fully understood how to use multiple aspects at once. The key to using any elements at once is to focus on several at a time. For example, makeup, location, and acting can be focused at once while elements like color and lighting can occur without any focus  applied.

Lighting in Film (Research)

Image
What is Lighting in Film " Lighting is a fundamental to film because it creates a visual mood, atmosphere, and sense of meaning for the audience. Whether it’s dressing a film set or blocking actors, every step of the cinematic process affects the lighting setup, and vice-versa." The Purpose of lighting in Film:  Lighting tells the audience where to look, Lighting reflects the psychology of characters, and Lighting defines and supports the genre of the film           Who is responsible for Lighting in Film The cinematographer Responsibility: "Design the lighting plan, executes the cinematographer’s lighting plan, and oversees the crew that brings the lighting plan to life." Cinematographer: Mauro Fiore Style: He usage of lighting changes on how the story is being told. He works on primarily action films and when parts of the movie are intensify he uses brigh...

Genre (Research).

Image
In class, we took notes on film codes and introductions to codes. From the notes, I learned that there were over 8 different types of signifiers. After the notes, we did a practice exercise on the trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. After the practice, I realized the acting of background characters could be broken down into codes to better grasp an understanding of the overall codes of the movies.          This practice was helpful because it gave me a better understanding of what makes a genre. Originally I thought the genre was composed of dialogue and actions. Understanding how colors, lighting, and the setting is going to be helpful when planning a spot for the 2 min intro. Likely were going to record a draft during the day because we want an action-comedy and having the sun would be better than recording during nighttime.

Media text and conventions warm-up (research)

Image
This was the first do now we had in class. The point of the assignment was to understand the importance of media text and conventions by answering the questions. The words in red a key terms that we will need to learn. From this assignment, I learned the connection between genre and conventions. This also required me to research what media texts are and how they are used.
